The Australian Aboriginal designs are colorful, vibrant and decorative. Aboriginal art is one of the oldest and most traditional art forms in the world. It is believed to be over 50.000 years old and was passed down through cave, rock, sand or earth paintings. Now she has found a new medium - the Aboriginal fabrics. The designs are created by Aboriginal artists and each fabric tells a story from Aboriginal mythology. Many small color dots are often used, the designs are based on familiar wild and animal motifs and usually use a lively color palette.
Dreamtime story for the “Waterhole” design by Anna Pitjara:
Anna Pitjara, born in 1965 at Utopia Station northeast of Alice Springs in the Northern Territory, comes from a family of renowned artists. Her late mother, Gloria Ngale, was an acclaimed artist. Anna made a name for herself at a young age in the 1980s through her work on well-known batik projects and gained considerable respect in the Utopia art scene. She adopted some dreamtime stories from her grandfather and father.
As a traditional Aboriginal designer, her art focuses on body painting designs. In the semi-desert and desert areas of the Northern Territory, water is considered a valuable commodity. The Aborigines were always keen to develop new water sources in the form of water holes or drainage ditches. Anna's design of a waterhole is almost reminiscent of an aerial view of salt lakes and the surrounding landscape. Her designs are innovative, precise and expressive. Many art galleries, including national and state museums, carry Anna's works in their collections.
