Sewing for Hope in Northern Iraq
In a world full of challenges, the... International Society for Human Rights (IGFM) in northern Iraq makes a significant contribution to alleviating suffering and distress. For years she has worked tirelessly to help those suffering from the consequences of conflict and oppression.
Sewing courses for women and girls
One of their projects focuses on supporting women and girls who spent years in ISIS captivity and now live in refugee camps in northern Iraq. These women and girls not only need support to overcome their traumatic experiences, but also practical skills and resources to build a new livelihood.
This is exactly where the IGFM's commitment comes in: By providing sewing courses, the IGFM not only gives these women practical skills, but also hope and the opportunity to take their future into their own hands again. This creates an anchor point for rebuilding self-esteem.
In the words of Khalil Al-Rasho, Head of Humanitarian Assistance in the Middle East at ISHR: “These courses are a place of healing and empowerment. They enable women to not only improve their skills, but also to regain their dignity and independence.” (Source: IGFM travel report May 2022)
Needed help
But continuing this work is critical, and community support is essential. The IGFM urgently needs donations of sewing machines and fabrics to ensure the continuity of these life-changing programs.

The IGMF's next trip to Iraq is scheduled for May. It will 25 sewing machines needed, which will be distributed to 16 refugee camps. Current At least 13 sewing machines are missing.
The more sewing machines come together, the more can become the private property of girls and women after the sewing course. This is important so that they can generate long-term and sustainable income.
